Does anyone have experience using B2, and replacing their personal Backblaze with it entirely (by backing up to the home server?)? Am I misunderstanding how B2 works (i.e. I'm calculating the cost wrong)?Īre there other services that are as easy to use and dependable as Backblaze that don't mind home servers using unlimited backup? I suppose worst case I can somehow mirror the server to my desktop for backup, but God that sounds like a poor strategy.

I plan on using FreeNAS, which has B2 compatibility, but I'm guessing I'd have to either create a jail or VM to back up all the data using a personal account, possibly through a Windows 10 installation and iSCSI?Īre there other services that are as easy to use and dependable as Backblaze that don't mind home servers using unlimited backup? Look, if I was running a business or something truly meaty, I'd just use B2 and backup all my other devices to the server, but given that I'm not, I'd rather use something that costs less. All I need is an online backup to store the files in case of catastrophe (like what happened with my Storage Space), I don't need to grab files other than when I'd need a complete or partial recovery. Backblaze is one of a few photo backup systems that I use. I personally like to do my photo backups with backblaze It's a simple and easy way to make sure your files are safe. There are so many options with external hard drives, services and tools.
It would be mostly used as a file server, so paying $5/TB/Mo seems a bit heavy, given that once my previous Storage Space is fully recovered, I'll have about 8TB of data already, meaning, if I understand how B2 works, I'd be paying $40+/Mo going forward, which is steep. It's always a good idea to backup your photos.
Until then, existing customers can lock in the old price of 60 per year for another year with extension backup credits (in essence, you prepay for another year of service). Given that I would be continuing to use these despite the server (as in, the $20+/mo I pay), I was curious if anyone has found a stable way to simply backup the contents to a Backblaze personal account as an additional PC.
